Anyone can make their website perform better in searches if they are just prepared to put some effort in. If you are in the UK then choose a .co.uk domain, they are always indexed faster than .com. If you want an international market then fine .com may work but it still won't be indexed as quickly in the UK. Try and have one of your keywords, at least, within your domain name. The domain name and your page titles are very important when it comes to search engines however if you have a website domain that has been around for a while do not abandon it for a keyword rich domain name, it is more worthwhile to keep the older domain and SEO this domain.
There are several basic things everyone should do to ensure their website's success in search engine results, search our website and blog for SEO Hints and Tips, Checklists and other SEO knowhow, however just a few of the things you can do to ensure your website performs well are;
- VISITORS MATTER!!
Your website should have clean tidy code with easy navigation. If you make your website easy for visitors to use the search engines will love it. SEO for your visitors not the search engines; maybe it should be called WEBSITE VISITOR OPTIMISATION not SEO!! To avoid unnecessary code use external CSS style sheets. Always check your coding with W3C. Ensure that your website is accessible by people with visual impairments by including alt and title text for every image. Every link needs a proper keyword description in the link text so that your visitors know where they will be taken when they click the link, never use "click here"s. - KEYWORDS AND KEYPHRASES
What are keywords? Work out your keywords and then make sure you use them in everything - Your meta tags, alt tags, link text and consistently, but not excessively, in the textual content of your pages. It is important that you write for your visitors not for search engines. The search engines are able to tell when you have stuffed the pages with keywords. Remember every page has different keywords depending on the content of that page. - SIMPLICITY
Use a flat, non-dynamic structure in your website. Simplicity is the keyword here. Avoid using Flash or dynamic menus unless you have a full HTML equivalent available, otherwise the search engines will not be able to read anything and your website will not be indexed causing your search engine result position to suffer. Remember that if your visitors or search engines have to delve too far into your website they will "bounce" away to a clearer and easier to navigate site. Make sure that every page can be reached by no more than 2 clicks from your home page. - SITEMAPS
Ensure you submit your website's Sitemap. Think about it, you would not know how to find a strange place without a map so don't expect a search engine to be able to find everything on your website without a sitemap! On Google Webmaster Tools you can submit the sitemap for your website. Make it easy for the search engines to find your website pages, help them with a sitemap.
